Free Gaming Guidelines

Game mechanics aren't ours to give — they're free by law. Here's how that works.

Use the mechanics

Copyright doesn't cover how a game works: its stats, its dice math, its turn structure, its systems. So take ours and build new games with them. No permission, no attribution, no royalties. This is true of every game's mechanics, not just ours.

If you want to use our actual wording — our creative text — or make something MythScript-compatible, that's a different thing. Use the Free Gaming License for that.

What this doesn't cover

Our non-mechanical text (the creative expression), our images, artwork, icons, and other visual elements, our logos, and our trade dress — the look and feel — are not free to reuse. Mechanics are; the way we dressed them up is not.

This can't be taken back

The core idea here — that copyright law doesn't protect game mechanics — isn't a favor we're granting. It's how the law works, and we can't revoke it.

Read the FAQ for the line between a mechanic and creative expression, with examples.
